This tour, an extension of the Mattley Road tour, climbs steeply from the road to the top of Mattley Ridge. The ascent is up an obvious ridge that is delightful to descend when the snow is accommodating. There are also fine views from the top of the ridge.
As an alternative, you can return via a more gradual descent described in the Mattley Ridge and Horse Gulch Loop tour. The loop adds 1.6 miles round trip.
