Everyone likes a loop trip. Here's a way to turn the Foster Meadow tour into a loop that is only slightly more difficult..
The Foster Meadow Loop adds a little bit of a challenge and excitement for beginners who may have never left the security of a road and forced to search out their own route. For this reason the tour is rated beginner-intermediate. But the navigation is pretty straight forward and can be done with only a map. It requires you to leave one road, enter the meadow and then find a road on the other side of the meadow. The total distance you are off the road is only about 0.2 mile. Of course a compass adds a sense of security and this is a good place to practice using it.
There is also the opportunity for a detour from Foster Meadow to visit Cosumnes Falls where the Middle Fork of the Cosumnes River plunges 20 feet.
Strong beginner-intermediate skiers can extend the Foster Meadow Loop tour by also skiing to the headwaters of the Middle Fork of the Cosumnes River.

Miles: 0.0 - 0.5
Elevation change: -100 feet

The Cosumnes River is small and runs through a culvert under Foster Meadow Road. The landmarks that signal that you are at the river include (1) the river is located at a low spot on Foster Meadow Road, (2) Foster Meadow Road turns to the west (left) at the river, and (3) a sign indicating the turnoff to the headwaters of the Cosumnes River is located immediately after crossing the river.
Waypoint 3 to 4
Miles: 1.0 - 1.6
Elevation change: -50 feet
Turn southwest (left) onto the lesser road and ski approximately 0.6 mile to the point where you leave the road (4). Pick a point where you can see an easy path through the trees to Foster Meadow located to the northwest. In a few places you can see the meadow from the road.
